This Instructor's Teaching Philosophy Emphasizes Patience and Community
"My number one tip as a beginner is to be patient with yourself"
At Nucamp, our instructors are the heart of our coding bootcamps, bringing not just technical expertise but also real-world experience and a passion for teaching. Today, we're excited to introduce you to Melanie McCall Diaz, a Front-End Web Dev and Mobile Development instructor who embodies the spirit of Nucamp's community-focused learning approach.
A Georgia native with a background in computer science from Georgia Tech, Melanie's journey into coding wasn't a straightforward path. "I can't say I've always wanted to code," she admits. "I just kind of landed here, and I love it." This relatable start to her tech career makes Melanie an ideal guide for career-changers and coding newcomers alike.
With about eight years of experience in the field, including six years of full-time work and additional freelance projects, Melanie has honed her skills in React, Vue, and Shopify development. Her expertise in front-end development, particularly in CSS, has made her a go-to resource for visual nuances in web design. "At my last full-time role, I was the person that handled all that type of stuff (for example), 'Oh, why is this not aligned right here?'" Melanie explains she would handle those changes. "I think a lot of us kind of know the basic functionality of things, but we don't spend as much time with those types of visual nuances."
What sets Melanie apart as an instructor is her commitment to creating a supportive learning environment. Drawing from her own experience, she recognizes the challenges of learning to code without a strong support system. "When I started coding, I lacked a support system. It's challenging to learn without anyone who understands the process." she reflects.
This realization shapes Melanie's teaching philosophy, which emphasizes patience and community. "My number one tip as a beginner is to be patient with yourself," she advises. "Especially now that I'm a mom and I have to teach my kids things, I think we forget that the learning process isn't the same for everyone. You're learning an entirely new language, so you just have to be patient with yourself above everything else."
Melanie's approach to instruction goes beyond just teaching code. "I feel like I'm not just a teacher, I'm support," she says. "Teaching is half of my job, and then the other half is kind of being that person that people can talk to more openly and realistically about what's happening."
This holistic view of education is what Melanie believes makes a great bootcamp instructor. "As a bootcamp instructor, we get more of a wider variety of students," she notes.
"You have to be willing to go the extra mile a little bit more because everyone's from a different background. Being able to take a little bit more time to break the material down to someone who's not used to technical type talk and also just being more open to everyone learning differently is crucial."
For current and future bootcamp students, Melanie's advice is clear: "Embrace the community. That's probably the most important part about being here. You have to not be afraid to ask questions, not be afraid to reach out to your peers. The community is huge."
Beyond her role as an instructor, Melanie brings a unique blend of experiences to her teaching. As a mother of two toddlers, she understands the challenges of balancing personal and professional life. Her background in freelancing and Shopify development allows her to offer practical insights into the world of web development.
Interestingly, Melanie's passion for coding is matched by her love for Latin dance. "I'm part of a salsa dance company," she shares. "I've been doing Latin dance probably longer than I've been doing coding, about 12 years now."
This combination of technical expertise, real-world experience, and diverse interests makes Melanie an invaluable asset to the Nucamp community. Her story reminds us that the path to a successful tech career isn't always linear, but with patience, perseverance, and a supportive community, it's entirely achievable.
As we continue to grow and evolve at Nucamp, instructors like Melanie ensure that our students receive not just top-notch technical education, but also the encouragement and support they need to thrive in their coding journey.
