From Retail to Front End Engineer, Jaxel

"The price really mattered to me. So many other bootcamps were so expensive. You get a lot of value with Nucamp without a lot of cost. You gain a mentor who is a professional in their field."

This is Rustam Kolumbayev, a Nucamp Full Stack Bootcamp graduate and now a Front End Engineer at Jaxel.

Rustam likes to stay active with CrossFit after a full day of work behind a desk.

He is originally from Kazakhstan and practiced law there before moving to the United States.

When he made the decision to move to the U.S. with the goal of improving his life, this also meant he was determined to shed the weight of his stressful law career.

Rustam was disappointed with his law profession and thought it was best to cool down his demanding lifestyle and pursue his childhood dream of getting into coding.

He had been interested in coding since he was 12 after reading Steve Jobs’ autobiography, but had given up on the idea when it seemed too complicated for him in high school.

With a stronger confidence in himself and the motivation to better his quality of life, Rustam began working at a startup to gain some experience with coding.

Rustam also worked in retail to cover his living expenses while he learned.

As the pressure to cover bills and improve his live increased, he decided to bulk up his education in a serious way.

Trying to teach himself from YouTube felt like jumping into an intense workout without a proper warmup; it was overwhelming.

He wanted a proven place to start, so Rustam searched for a coding bootcamp to coach him through his learning plateau.

Unfortunately, many of the bootcamps he considered were over his budget’s weight class, except for Nucamp's coding bootcamps.

Nucamp out benched the competition's pricing while still delivering the value Rustam was looking for.

Rustam thought his React instructor was awesome; she was always responsive and answered all his questions thoroughly.

Having a spotter through the more challenging concepts along the way made all the difference for Rustam.

“Through this journey I discovered more things are possible than I thought. If you work hard, you can change your life and find what you're looking for.”

Describe your job search process.

Rustam took a few months after graduating to work on a few of his projects for his portfolio and to round out his resume.

Then he took to LinkedIn to connect with people in the industry and apply to companies he was interested in.

He also made a point to continue applying his skills and improving on what he had learned.

About three months after beginning his job search, Rustam was offered his new job to start his career as a Front End Engineer.

Tell me about a moment of doubt or difficulty and how did you overcome it?

“My main challenge was with React. Bootstrap was not a big deal for me, but React became crazy. I overcame it by not giving up and working on it until I got through it. Once it clicked for me, React Native was much simpler and it was worth the effort to overcome my initial difficulties.”
